What really happens at a newborn photoshoot?| Newborn photographer SW London

You see the beautiful photos, the lovely and soft outfits, the smiles and cuddles, and really, this is only scratches the surface. What it truely take to create a gallery of beautiful images, like the ones that are delivered to my families, is care, craft and experience. Newborn photoshoots are differnt to other kinds where the photographer can guide and give direction to the clients. As a professional newborn and family photographer in Kingston Upon Thames, I will guide you through what actually happens at a photo session.

With newborn photography, the photographer needs to pose the baby to create the images you see; not only pose the baby, but also settle them. and manage other elements such as lighting, temperature of the baby/room. This is why newborn photography can sometimes take a while to complete.

As a professional newborn and family photographer in Kingston Upon Thames, I will guide you through what actually happens at a photo session.

Before the shoot!

Before your shoot takes place, I will send you over two special guides. The first is a special session guide; this guide will give you all the info you will require to prepare for your special photo shoot with me. Whetehr its a newborn, maternity milestone/family session, all the info is clearly laid out.

You will also receive a style guide, which assists you in getting your outfit choices ready for the day. This helps you to take the pressureoff what you should wear and gives you real tips on how to style your session.

The studio and shoot day

Sessions are held at my professional photos studio in SW London, near Richmond, Surrey and Wimbledon, where I have designed the perfect space for parents and their newborns to be comfortable and happy.

The studio has a large window, which creates stunning soft light that I use in my photography to create those soft, dreamy images. I use a large beanbag covered with soft blankets and keep to my neutral and natural style. There are many beautiful outfits for babies to wear, as well as high-quality blankets and wraps, such as those from all newborn props, which elevate the style created. I only use the best for my little clients! I also have small teddies, bonnets and textured blankets in similar styles.

There is a heater to keep the room at an ambient temperature so the baby is always warm and confortable and I check the baby regularly to ensure they are.

There is a sofa area for parents to sit comfortably, and close to their baby. A coffee and tea station is also available with snacks and water to keep the energy levels up! It is also a perfect spot to feed your baby if they need a top-up too!

And finally, there is a range of albums and wall art to browse through whilst watching your baby be photographed. These have been curated by me to complement the style of photographs I create at my studio and to be a beautiful decorative piece in your home.

How I gently pose and photograph your baby

When you arrive at your session, your baby is 90% of the time asleep. I carefully take your baby out of the carseat and will dress your baby in an outfit of your choice (there are many to choose from). I then start to carefully pose your baby into various positions, taking photos along the way. I always take great care and position them gently.

The session usually lasts about 2 hours ( sometimes less, sometimes more), but during this time baby may wake for a feed and change, which is perfectly normal. I never rush your baby and only do what he or she is comfortable with. I only use soft props to pose your baby in.

Many parents have commented that they were worried that their baby would cry or be awake, and all of that is normal. If your baby cries, we settle them. If your baby is awake, we take awake photos.

Including the family

As part of being a newborn photographer in SW London, I also take family photos at the newborn session. I include siblings and parents (and sometimes even the family pet or grandparents), and these photos are just as important as the baby photos themselves. I aim to create a story of this special time and loveto create a variety of different family photos. With over 7 years of experience photographing babies and their families in Wimbledon, Putney, New Malden, Surrey, SW London and Richmond upon Thames, you can be assured that I will guide and support you all the way.
